- Locals regularly bring offerings in the form of flowers and boiled eggs to keep the mountain calm and quiet.
- The Balinese call Mount Agung the “navel of the world” and they consider it the center of the universe.
- Even the north direction is not regulated like in other parts of the world but is determined based on the location of Agung. The Balinese view the concept of the north as “upstream” where the gods reside. Therefore, in their minds, the north direction always leads to the mountains.
- There is a temple just below the slope of the volcano named Besakih. Despite the danger of an eruption, local residents refused to follow orders and continued to attend the ceremony despite warnings.
- Some ceremonies dedicated to the volcano end with local women carrying embers in their bare hands.
- The most important ceremony is meant to purify the world and is held every 100 years.
- If there is an important ceremony, climbers are prohibited from climbing the volcano. This mostly happens during the month of April.

Common trails for climbing Mount Agung

But it should be remembered that Mount Agung is a sacred mountain for the Balinese Hindu community. Because of that, you can’t climb it and you have to follow local directions. Therefore, climbers are advised to use the services of a local guide.
In total, there are two climbing routes that are commonly used, namely the Besakih Temple route and the Pasar Agung Temple route.
1. Trekking Mount Agung Sunrise via Pasar Agung Temple

The journey to the highest peak on the island of Bali begins or takes the start point from Pasar Agung Temple in the village of Sebudi Karangasem, this temple is located on the slopes of a mountain so the air is cold. There is also ample parking space available.
If you bring a vehicle, then you can park here safely. The journey from Ngurah Rai airport or Denpasar to the start point of climbing Mount Agung in Karangasem is about 2 hours driving, through the village of Sebudi Selat, Karangasem Regency.
With a trekking route on the southern slopes, but some use a climbing route with the Besakih temple starting point, which is also a tourist attraction in the East Bali region. However, the most recommended route is the Pasar Agung Temple route in Sebudi village, Selat District, Karangasem, because it is closer.
There are two choices of climbing destinations, namely peak 1 and peak 2. For the peak 1 route, you can take it via the West route, you will be escorted at a peak height of about ± 3,044 masl starting climbing around 12.00 at night, because the journey to the highest peak is around 5- 6 hours.
2. Trekking Mount Agung Sunrise via Besakih Temple

In addition to the Pasar Agung Temple route, Mount Agung Sunrise Trekking can also be reached via the Besakih Temple route. This path is filled with charming natural scenery, through this route climbers can also see Besakih Temple, the largest temple on the island of Bali.
This route can start the journey from Denpasar City to the north by covering a distance of about 25 km. Given that the track via this route is quite difficult, climbers are required to use the services of a companion ranger.
The starting point for climbing the Besakih Temple route is at an altitude of 1,250 meters above sea level. In addition to these two routes, there is one new trekking route that you can take on the circumference of the slopes of Mount Agung. This trekking route was created as a hiking trail as well as tracing Mount Agung from a safe circle.
This Mount Agung sunrise trekking route was made by Pasebaya Agung Volunteers along with local guides who have been taking many tourists to climb Mount Agung. The route is the Pengubengan Temple route to Pasar Agung Temple.
Then there is another route from Pasar Agung Temple to Yeh Kori in Jungutan, Babandem. From Yeh Kori climbers will take the route to Pura Nangka. The Mount Agung sunrise trekking route is quite safe for novice climbers who want to enjoy the panoramic view of the sunset on Mount Agung or just go around. This zone is in a radius of more than 2 kilometers.
Enjoying the Purified Beauty of Nature

Mount Agung is a mountain that is sacred by the Balinese people, because they believe that on Mount Agung Bali there is a palace of the Gods where the gods live. However, Mount Agung is also the most active mountain in Bali.
It is proven that Mount Agung has erupted 6 times, the first time in 1808 and the last time in 2018. When Mount Agung erupted in 1963, Balinese people believed that it was a warning from the Gods.
There are several activities you can do at Mount Agung, the first is to visit Besakih Temple which is at the foot of Mount Agung. This temple often holds religious ceremonies and its peak during the full moon is called the Odalan celebration.

But if you only want to reach peak 1, which is at an altitude of 3030 meters above sea level and peak 2 at an altitude of 2000 meters above sea level, then you can choose to go through the Pura Pasar Agung route.
